Dark Blooms

There's something dainty yet dark about the punky Luella-esque florals that are on my trend radar right now. I'm all for indulging in these delicate florals in lightweight fabrics when the weather warms up.

Single And The City

Yes, I saw the movie today. Yes, I enjoyed it. The ladies looked over-the-top fabulous. If you haven't seen it, this is where you might want to stop reading.

Ok... for those who have seen it, I have one question. Okay, maybe two. Once and for all, why can't Hollywood send the message that's it's ok to be single? In movies, why do women always have to find love to be happy? There's nothing wrong with being like Samantha - strong, single, self-assured, and happy! I enjoyed the flick, however, don't let Hollywood brainwash you into thinking that you need a man to be happy! Find true happiness within yourself! I feel that Hollywood endings are so selfish on the part of writers, producers, etc. - because they give the viewer what they want but they perpetuate myths and are far from realistic. The truth is that yes, you can be single, fulfilled, and happy...with an amazing wardrobe or without. What I took away from the film (besides the fact that most women on the street will never look as stylish as Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte) is that it's the friendships in your life that are most important and will help get you through hard times.

What To Wear - A Summer Casual Friday

Office dress codes - I often despise them due to their restrictions and their outdated views on fashion. Sure, I understand that they help promote a professional-looking environment and keep safety issues in mind. But sometimes on a hot summer day a girl wants to wear high-heeled sandals, especially if she's sitting at a desk all day! And despite what some dress codes may dictate, shorts, like the ones pictured below, can be professional/appropriate for the right age group (perhaps a woman under 35 or with great legs) without being too revealing. With this anti-dress code sentiment in mind, I've created the perfect summer outfit for a southern California casual Friday.casual Friday outfit

It's A Shoe-In

Marshalls shoe mega shop
It's no secret that I have always had a love affair with footwear. From the pink cowboy boots that I wore at age ten to the Fornarina platform wedges that I bought a few summers ago, I have fallen in love with many a pair of shoes. So when I walked into the Shoe MegaShop at Marshalls this past weekend, I knew I'd find something to suit my taste. As I browsed through aisles and aisles of peep-toe wedges, slingbacks, ballet flats, athletic shoes, and sporty flip flops, a pair of gorgeous Nine West sandals with sculptural heels caught my eye. They came in white patent, bronze, and black patent. Tough choice, because they had my size in each color. Better yet, at the low price of $24.99, I could even opt for more than one pair. I mulled it over as I walked through the large space, which was surprisingly neat and organized for a Saturday afternoon.

If you haven't been to a Marshalls lately and experienced the Shoe MegaShop, Marshalls has been expanding its family footwear departments in hundreds of stores across the United States. Each Shoe MegaShop will feature an expanded 5,000-square-foot shoe department in an easy-to-shop 'store within a store.' Shoes are organized by style, and boxes are placed below each style to make for easy and fast shopping. To add to the selection, the perimeter wall shelves at the store I visited contained hundreds of shoes organized by size, with an extensive selection of colorful printed rain boots, which almost made me wish for rain.

As I shopped, I spied trendy styles by: Jessica Simpson, Anne Klein, Bongo, Nine West, Tahari, Steve Madden, and Converse. In addition to the sculptural heels by Nine West, I particularly liked a towering tan platform pump by Jessica Simpson and some baby blue Converse All Stars. Most of the prices were under $60, and many of the shoes I admired were under $30. The selection includes small Men's and Children's sections as well, making it family-friendly, budget-friendly, and convenient.

Rogan For Target - A Review

With much anticipation and excitement, I woke up early today to check out Rogan's new organic pieces for Target's latest GO International line. Given all the buzz surrounding this line, coupled with the early release at Barney's in New York and Los Angeles, I was anxious to try on the garments and feel the fabrics. I am, after all, a sucker for animal prints and big-name designers doing cheap chic lines for mass retailers. (And I'm still wondering what happened to my invitation to the Barney's L.A. event, LOL.)

So I arrived at Target early this morning, before the crowds got out of church. I was disappointed to see that many of the smaller sizes in things that I liked were already sold out. Upon inquiring, I found out that this particular store had released the line on Friday morning. Sometimes Target stores tend to do that. I was at the same store on Thursday checking to see if they had put the Rogan merchandise out yet, but I was still too early. Sometimes it pays to go before the GO release dates, as you might have first pick of all the goods.

As I browsed, I gravitated towards the printed pieces, such as the silk leopard dress, the zebra miniskirt, the tiger print graphic tee, the back-print zebra tank, the beach towel, and the leopard print shorts. None of the dresses or plain tees caught my attention, except for the gray T-shirt dress which they did not have in my size. I found that like most GO collections, the tops ran big, and some of the pieces are too boxy and might require a belt to add shape. I liked the use of organic cotton, linen, and silk, as I have always favored natural fibers as opposed to manmade ones that usualy dominate the GO lines. They're healthier, more breathable, and more comfortable. I also liked the Rogan "r" logo that's stitched on some pieces, and I liked the overlock stitching and seam details on the tank tops. Some of the tops and dresses were so lightweight and transparent that I didn't even try them on. They'd make great swim cover-ups for the summer, though. The plaid printed top and jumper were probably my least favorite, as I think plaid is better suited to fall/winter months and doesn't look good when it's done in linen.

For the most part, I think there are great casual basics in the line that will appeal to the masses, and hopefully, Rogan Gregory's line will raise awareness about wearing organic clothing, using recycled waste paper to print hang tags, and being more conscious of our impact on the environment. Many of the pieces are versatile because they come in neutral hues of black, white, ivory, or gray. If you're looking for bright summer colors, there are yellow and turquoise burnout tanks and in addition to mesh tops. As I look at the tags on the pieces I bought, I see that some of the pieces were made in China, Vietnam, and Bangladesh. I hope that child labor, chemical dyes, and unregulated factories were not involved in the production of the line. Organic clothing tends to be on the pricey side, but with Rogan's line for Target, I think it proves that mass retailers can be more eco-friendly, stylish, and affordable at the same time.

Even though I tried on the skinny jeans (in the second photo from the top), I passed on them because the rise was too low. Otherwise, the fit was excellent, and I liked the "r" logo on the back pocket. Rogan, who is know for making great organic denim with labels Loomstate and Edun, also has some wide-leg trousers in the line, which I didn't try on. I was impressed with the pants, and in general, snagging a pair of Rogan jeans for $39.99 is impressive! Other cute details that I liked was the use of different colored threads on the buttons of some garments. Also, I smiled when I saw that the inside care labels say, "Garment may soon contain: grass, dirt, oil, paint, sweat, tears, rain, mud, etc. but that is up to you." That's clothing with personality!

Shopping Heaven in Argentina - Unicenter

Of all the people that I observed during my trip to Buenos Aires, I thought that the young teens in and around Unicenter were the most stylish. With about 300 stores, Unicenter may be South America's biggest shopping center, and given the endless shopping and entertainment options that Unicenter offers, I can understand why there were droves of people of all ages there on the Sunday evening when I went. People in Argentina love to hang out, watch each other, and shop. What I liked most is that the mall is open until 10pm daily, so that's a bonus for people like me who prefer to shop later in the day. If you plan on traveling to Buenos Aires, my advice would be to skip the rest of the malls in the city and head out to Unicenter (which is in the suburb of Martínez, about 25km from downtown Buenos Aires). It has all of the same stores as the malls in the city and then some, and better yet - without the tourist markups. The mall even does a shopping tour with free lunch from 1pm to 6pm, with transportation to and from certain hotels. It's a great place to see what the locals are buying, wearing, and doing. Below is a candid street style photo of three stylish teen girls that I spotted just outside Unicenter.

Shopping in Buenos Aires - Part 4

Below is the fourth and final installment of my shopping and store window photos from my trip to Buenos Aires. The bold colors and creative styling in the displays constantly caught my attention, and while I was expecting to buy more during my trip, I'm grateful that I refrained from buying on many occasions. (The exchange rate was good for U.S. dollars to pesos, but the merchandise in Buenos Aires were not terribly reasonable or unique, like I was hoping it would be.) After all, I have these photos to inspire me and serve as reminders of how stylish and energetic the city of Buenos Aires is. Enjoy!

Shopping In Buenos Aires - Part 3

Here are some more photos from my shopping excursions in Buenos Aires. For those who have never been to this energetic South American city, the Buenos Aires metropolitan area has its fair share of upscale malls, including Paseo Acorta, Alto Palermo, Buenos Aires Design, Patio Bullrich, Unicenter, and Galerías Pacifico. Between the malls, the many local designer boutiques, outdoor flea markets, and busy shopping corridors such as Avenida Santa Fe, Buenos Aires is a shopper's paradise.

Rather than follow the upcoming A/W '08 European runway trends, it seemed to me that the Argentinian designers were influenced by previous seasons. They also create their fashion own trends (such as the drop-crotch pants I bought), in addition to using cheaper locally produced fabrics such as leather, cashmere, and wool. Traditional fall fabrics such as tweed, plaid, corduroy, leather, suede, and chunky knits were dominant on the racks of the chain stores. Important colors for fall in Buenos Aires include: cherry red, kelly green, deep purple, royal blue, and ebony. Deep purple in particular appeared to be the single most popular color used in window displays. Many of the stores I visited had the clothing arranged in groups by color. This made it easier for me to head straight to the garments I liked in shades of blue, purple, or green, as those tend to be my favorite hues.

As far as embellishments, I noticed sequins, glitter, peacock feathers, studs, and fringe on clothing and leather goods. At Rapsodia (whose jeans are favored by the editors at Lucky magazine and now by me as well), bohemian styles and lightweight flirty tops reigned supreme. Most of the denim at Rapsodia was low rise and straight leg or skinny leg, and the washes were lighter in color with minor fading and whiskering on the thighs. Skinny ankle-zip jeans were also popular at the trendy, youthful retailers. John Cook was the place to go for shiny metallic leggings, long jersey tunics, and neon jeans. Looking for bright, fun, and flashy clubwear? Then I'd recommend A.Y. Not Dead. I spotted high-waisted wide leg trousers at several boutiques, although I didn't see any high-waisted skinny leg styles. I was happy to see a few pairs of jodhpurs in some of the independent boutiques, although they were more conservative and less baggy in the thigh than styles seen on past season's runways.

Standout styles that I admired included: hot pink leather boots, crochet vests, colorful thick leather belts, stretchy wrap sweaters that can be tied various ways, fringed hobo handbags, flirty brocade dresses, and bold graphic tees with bursts of neon.

Shopping In Buenos Aires - Part 2

Although I studied Spanish for several years in high school and college, the slight language barrier between myself and the salespeople that I encountered in Buenos Aires gave me more guts to whip out my camera inside a multitude of stores and start snapping away. (The pronunciation of many words in Argentina has an Italian influence and sounds very different from the Spanish that I hear spoken in southern California.) In general, I prefer to photograph store windows from the street at night, when there is less glare from the sun, however, I found that the staff in many of the independent boutiques did not mind or even care if I took pictures inside their stores. It's illegal to take photos inside many stores in the United States, so I was thrilled to be able to shop and take pictures simultaneously in Buenos Aires. At other places, I wasn't so lucky. At two out of the four of the malls that I visited (Alto Palermo and Paseo Alcorta), the security guards did ask me to stop taking pictures very nicely. Perhaps they figured I was a tourist, so I didn't feel so bad. After two days of shopping, I realized that not surprisingly, most of the store windows at the mall stores were the same, for example, Rapsodia featured a purple turban-like headband in a few of its store windows and Ayres repeatedly featured colorful hats in purple, red, and orange. Here are some more photos of my favorite merchandising displays.

Maria Allô was by far my favorite boutique in all of Buenos Aires. The window display with the tall ladder grabbed my attention when walking by. Upon entering, I admired the Victorian-inspired wall with mirrors, vintage photos, and high ceilings. The cash wrap area was set up on a beautiful piano in one of the most creative uses of retail space that I've ever seen. To top it off, the merchandise was exquisite, cutting edge, and one-of-a-kind. Sex and the City was being shown via a digital projector. If I hadn't known better, this could have easily been a boutique in New York City. As I browsed, I admired a sultry skin-baring dress which had a low cut back and bustier-like bodice with a full skirt.
Many of the stores in Buenos Aires keep very little merchandise on the racks, so I often had to ask for other colors or sizes if I was interested. I noticed that the sales staff were often friendly and greet customers with a "que tal" ("how's it going") or "hola" ("hi"). At many of the stores, the sales girls suggested other items for my friends and I to inspect once we inquired about certain items, and they were generally helpful and friendly, although very few of them spoke English.

I've got many more Buenos Aires shopping photos and will continue to post them this week.
* Also, on a somewhat unrelated note, I saw Project Runway alum Austin Scarlett at the MALBA museum in Buenos Aires. He walked past us and into the cafe as we picked up our belongings from the check-in desk, but I didn't get the chance to take a picture. I'm wondering if he was there to get inspiration for some new designs?
