Steppin' Out - Hidden Platforms

As I shop the Fall '07 shoe styles, I can't help but notice a trend in the making. It's a subtle but noticeable trend to someone like myself, who has worked in the footwear industry. I've always loved platforms. What's not to love about platforms? They can add inches to your shoe height without increasing the discomfort because they lift the front of the foot. In my experience, this has made my shoes more comfortable because it provides more stability. Platforms also cushion the ball of the foot and when combined with high heels, decrease the angle between the heel and the ball of the foot. This season, there are an increasing amount of platforms that are hidden, or covered. This lends a streamlined, sexy look to fall pumps, boots, and peep-toes styles.

This Isaac Mizrahi for Target "Sandy" platform ankle boot is available at target.com for $36.99. It features a 4" heel and is made of faux patent leather. Note the small zipper on the outside - pretty chic! Pair with some thick tights and a pencil skirt for a sexy but understated look.

This patent leather T-strap is made by Dru New York. It has a 4.25" covered heel and is available at urbn.com for $150.

Is it just me, or has Nine West become more edgy lately? This "Lareine" pump features a satin upper, contrasting piping, a covered platform, and 4" heel. It is available at zappos.com for $92.95. It also comes in several other colors if blue doesn't appeal to you.

The Steve Madden "Lezlie" pump has a 4" heel, a hidden mini-platform midsole, and is made of pony hair. It retails for $100.95 at zappos.com. If you aren't fond of the giraffe print, it also comes in black patent.

I saved the best for last. These pumps (in the season's hottest color) by Giuseppe Zanotti are made of suede, have a metallic heel, and feature removable ankle straps. They cost $598.95 at zappos.com.
