The In & Out of '09 Trends

While standing in an unusually long line at Wet Seal today, I had some time to make some observations and ponder fashion trends of 2009. With mild hopes of purchasing two pairs of floral leggings that I didn't need, I waited in line for a couple of minutes. During this time, I grew impatient, and entertained myself by slightly cringing as I watched a teenage shopper try on a fedora with a sequin bow detail. As the girl's friend urged her to buy the hat, it sparked the idea for this blog post on trends that are in and out. Don't get me wrong, I like fedoras, and I even own a few, but I think the trend has run its course on the trend cycle, and I'll wait until they aren't being worn by every pop star before I wear one again. So as the year comes to an end, there are some trends that I'd like to casually declare as in and out. Whether you agree or disagree with the list, it's just a personal assessment of things I think are trendworthy or not.

Out: tattoo prints and tie dye
In: winter florals, animal prints, and Breton stripes
Out: enormous handbags
In: mini bags and minaudiere clutches
Out: ethnic print scarves
In: infinity scarves
Out: fedoras
In: bowler hats, sequin berets, and slouchy beanies
Out: cargo pants
In: tailored jumpsuits
Out: peasant tops
In: tops embellished with chains, fringe, and lace
Out: babydoll silhouettes
In: body con
Out: gladiator sandals
In: embellished boots

In With the New Year

In my recent quest for the ideal New Year's Eve outfit, I've persistently browsed the new arrivals on Forever 21's website almost daily for party-appropriate pieces. I view the last day of the year as the perfect opportunity to be bold with prints, texture, accessories, and makeup. Not sure what to wear, but want to make a statement? I'm undecided as to what I'll be wearing, but I'm inspired by shiny finishes, pretty heels, and glamorous two-piece ensembles, which provide a great alternative to the predictable LBD.

Don't Bother Santa, He's Surfing

I'm not much of a holiday person, but this year, I decided to do something I've always wanted to do - construct and decorate a gingerbread house (using a kit). Perhaps my next attempt will involve some baking. Thanks to J.V. for your engineering and creative skills for helping to make this happen!

gingerbread house

In an effort to avoid the mall crowds, maintain my exercise regimen, and enjoy the sunny weather, I went for a beach bike ride this morning, where I saw a few random things: a middle-aged, plus-sized jogger wearing the Rodarte for Target lace print tee minus the bow, 2 Santas parking their cars, 1 Santa on a motorcycle, the attractive bouncer at a club I frequent too often, a guy I dated years ago and his new dog, and lots of people who, like me, were exercising and trying to avoid last-minute holiday shoppers. When I returned home with renewed energy from the 8-mile ride, I was stoked to see the UPS truck in front, dropping off a package that made me very happy. You see, I managed to purchase the Rodarte for Target lace tights just as they became available on Target's website at midnight PST. Before they were shipped, I was half expecting that they'd be out of stock, and now I feel fortunate to have them in my hands, given their high demand and sparse appearance in many Target stores. I'm also kicking myself for not ordering two or three pairs in case they rip. (Oh well, if they do, I guess it will just enhance their cobwebby Rodarte-esque aesthetic.)

Also, thank you to Michele for including me in the Rodarte for Target feature. Happy holidays!

December '09 Store Window Style

As the year comes to an end, I'm cleaning out my closet to create more space, setting new short and long term personal goals, and reviewing some of favorite store window photos. Although today is the official first day of winter, I'm already anticipating spring/summer trends. In the meantime, here are nine of my favorite store window photos from the month of December, all shot in the Los Angeles or Santa Barbara area.

Rodarte for Target - A Review

After weeks of anticipation, I braved my local Target this afternoon for a look at Rodarte's efforts for the latest GO International collection the day before the official debut. Fortunately, the store had a large selection, with most sizes still on the racks. Unfortunately, the lace tights and knee socks were nowhere to be found. Here's what the racks looked like at about 2pm...

After a quick scan of each rack, I pulled a few of my favorites and headed off to the steaming hot fitting rooms. The first piece I tried was the much-blogged about sequin rib cage dress. I pulled a size small, and added my own belt for a blouson effect. Here are my thoughts on the pros and cons:
Pros: fashion forward, eye-catching, sequins seemed to be attached pretty well.
Cons: back is made of polyester (not sequins), the length was too long before I belted it, and the fabric was ever so slightly itchy/stiff on my skin. Also, the fit was a bit awkward, as the dress wasn't as form-fitting as I'd hoped.

Next up was the gorgeous floral halter dress. I can imagine wearing this to a fancy lunch, wedding shower, or tea party, if only I had such events to attend...
Pros: beautiful print, great textural detail, decent lining, cute bow detail.
Cons: made me look bigger, hook and eye neck closure was a little tricky.

After seeing Dakota Fanning model the leopard lace dress in Teen Vogue, I had to try it on. I pulled a size 3, added my belt, and was both surprised and disappointed. Here's why:
Pros: very well-tailored, trendy print, intricate lace texture, fair price for the amount of detail and the fit.
Cons: too tight in the arms, slightly stiff fabric, difficult to zip up the center back zipper and snap the three bows in the back.

Here's the black slip dress in a size small. I imagine wearing this in a way that's more rocker grunge than sugary and feminine. Perhaps some studded boots or a moto jacket would toughen it up to my liking.
Pros: comfortable (not itchy), nice lace trim and lingerie-like styling, great price for the amount of detail, also comes in mustard and nude colorways.
Cons: too much static cling, slightly difficult side zip (gets stuck), looks best on women with medium or larger busts.

The sequin gray leopard dress was one of the items on my wish list, and I tried on a size small.
Pros: suitable for parties and nights on the town, sequins are sewn on pretty well, easy pull-on style, has a comfortable lining, silhouette and length are flattering on various body types.
Cons: awkward loose fit in the underarm area, low cut in the front.

I grabbed the black printed tee (in as size small) because I was intrigued by the sketch-like print and hadn't seen it on any blogs, lookbooks, or on ebay.
Pros: runs true to size, made of 100% cotton, interesting print, fits well, is soft.
Cons: like the sequin leopard dress, the U-neckline was very low cut and would require some layering.

Photobucket

I didn't plan on buying any of the lace or knit cardigans in the collection, but I was undeniably smitten by the one in black lace. The fact that it felt like summer today probably contributed to my buying it as well. The styling options with this cardigan lend itself to Gothic glamour as well as ladylike/prim and proper, and such versatility strongly appeals to me.
Pros: soft, delicate floral pattern, sturdy snap closures, includes two patch pockets, has hefty ribbed cuffs and hem, perfect for layering, also comes in mustard and nude colorways.
Cons: can't think of any, I liked everything about it!

After seeing the coral wrap dress on one blogger, I was impressed and curious. I didn't hesitate to grab my size.
Pros: very ladylike, great lace detail on upper back, has nice embroidery, vintage-like styling, has a lining.
Cons: too diaphanous (lightweight), made me feel older (as if I raided my grandmother's closet), wrist closures a little tricky/tight.

Before I wrap up this review, I've got two requests for Target executives:

1. Instruct your store employees/managers to use a/c in the fitting rooms. (It's always too hot, and makes me want to leave the store empty-handed ASAP.)
2. Send memos, have brief meetings, or educate your employees about upcoming Target collections. How can so many Target employees be so clueless about such a hugely anticipated collection? (I called more than 4 stores before anyone knew who Rodarte was or that it was even coming out this month).

All in all, it looked like a very delicate and girly collection by the Mulleavy sisters. Attention to detail, interesting use of texture, various prints (stripes, floral, lace, leopard, sketch-like, and vintage-inspired) and feminine flourishes make this collection unlike any of the previous GO International collections. Although polyester was heavily used, it felt softer and appeared to be of higher quality than in typical GO International collections. The Rodarte pieces touched on several trends that I'm enjoying this season and that I'll still be wearing next season: sequins, animal prints, sheer details, lingerie styling, and vintage glamour. I would've liked to have seen some pants, leggings, or more tights/legwear in this collection. Come spring, I can imagine that the delicate camisoles, the slip dresses, and the lace cardigans will be perfectly appropriate and on-trend.

**Dec. 20, 2009 update - So I went a little overboard on my shopping, and I have the sequin ribcage dress in medium. I'm willing to sell to someone who wants it more than I do, so email me or leave a comment if interested.

Family Affair: A pretty dress with an embellished neckline or embroidery, something you can throw a cardigan over, move around, and have fun in.

Office Party: Simple shift or sheath dress that will take you from a day at the office to the party that night, with a change of shoes and accessories.

Girls Night Out: A great strapless dress in a bold color like a violet or red is perfect. Add a cropped leather jacket or blazer to give it some edge.

You have to find a shape that works for you and stick with it. Try on every shape you can until you find the one you are most comfortable in and shows off your best assets.

What are some ways to up the glamour of your favorite little black dress for the holiday season?
Accessories are the best way to glam up a LBD. You can use so many different kinds of colorful jewelry to stand out, play around and have fun with it. Also, a bright bold lip is a great way to spice up an outfit.

Trend On The Rise - Chain Details

If you're suffering from an overdose of studs as embellishments, then the recent proliferation of chains might be a suitable alternative. Equally as tough as studs, they make quite the statement when added to your favorite tee, belt, pair of boots, or handbag. The great thing about chains is that if you're considering a DIY project, they're easy and inexpensive to add with the help of either some small safety pins or a quick session with the needle and thread. The options are endless - add some to your favorite denim vest, use them to inject some attitude to your knee high socks, or toughen up a simple sweatshirt by adding some thin layered chains. Below are some of my favorite fast fashion picks from the sites that I browse most often.

Potatoes and Polka Dots

My recent fondness for food photography doesn't mean this is turning onto a food & fashion blog, however, I delight in documenting meals that I thoroughly enjoy, so food photos may make more appearances on Fashion Trend Guide. Today's delicious lunch at one of my preferred local eateries consisted of a vegetable frittata, roasted potatoes, and biscuit. It was more than enough to fuel a short but effective trip to my favorite thrift store, where I found a great beaded jacket and a black velvet top with strappy details on the upper back.

Photobucket

I pulled my polka dot Cheap Mondays out of the closet for the first time since purchasing them ages ago. I was waiting for a perfectly gloomy day like today in order to juxtapose the cheerful polka dot print against the rainy weather.

Ardently Awaiting the Holidays

As invites to holiday events roll in, it's time to start thinking about what to wear. Instead of stressing about gift buying, travel plans, and cooking, I tend to place a strong emphasis on the wardrobe aspect of the season. As I often find myself overdressed for my regular evening excursions, I relish this time of year, not for the holidays themselves, but for the extra opportunities to get glam. Tired of the same old sites that I browse almost daily, I clicked on over to Arden B., the slightly more sophisticated version of Wet Seal. Not surprisingly, I found a few very affordable wardrobe contenders (and possible gift ideas) for the holiday season.

Known for her edgy take on fashion, she always looks effortlessly undone, as if she's not trying too hard. Her style icons may include Taylor Momsen or Erin Wasson.

Dedicated to Diva

While shopping at a local mall, I discovered an amazing new accessories store called Diva. On-trend merchandise, low prices, extensive selection, and compelling visual merchandising characterize this Australia-based chain that I'd previously never heard of (and I've been to Australia twice...go figure). As I browsed Diva's offerings for the first time, I was in awe of all the jewelry trends they presented - layered pearls, bib necklaces, rhinestone bangles, skull rings, diamante animal rings, flowery headbands, long & tangled chain necklaces, etc. Stores like Diva are ideal for fulfilling the occasional jewelry craving that I get. Accessories are a quick and easy way for me to update my style while keeping boredom at bay, and I can always manage to make room in my jewelry armoire for more rings.

What I loved most is that the merchandise at Diva is presented in clearly marked trend groupings such as Byzantine, Rocker, English Rose, etc. I spent most of my time in the Rocker section, not surprisingly. I found two perfectly chunky skull rings I'd been searching for, each under $9. I also picked up a stamped Wasson-esque knuckle ring and a blingy right-hand ring. For my southern California readers who are interested, they also have locations in Glendale and San Diego. I expect to be making frequent visits to Diva to satisfy my predilection for inexpensive and trendy accessories.

A Weekend of Food

In addition to consuming a fair share of mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, and corn bread over Thanksgiving weekend, I succeeded at my one goal for the four-day time period - not to go shopping or buy anything other than food. As a tribute to my overindulgence, I thought I'd share some photos of what I ate (not including Thanksgiving).

On Saturday morning, I visited the local farmers' market, where I couldn't resist the mouth-watering coconut macaroons.

Photobucket

Then I headed to my favorite South American restaurant to satisfy my craving for a garbanzo bean salad and savory empanadas.

Photobucket

Photobucket

On Sunday, a grilled cheese sandwich and alfalfa sprout salad with lemon dill dressing filled me up for lunch.

Photobucket

I must admit that it was challenging for me not to do any shopping (in store or online), but keeping myself busy with other things such as cooking, dining out, biking, walking the dog, and reading made the weekend both fulfilling and enjoyable.

Oh, Rodarte!

Rodarte for Target

image scanned from People Style Watch

Having just received my copy of People Style Watch, I was excited to see their preview of the Rodarte for Target collection (on page 54) set to be released in just under three weeks. I'm currently weighing my anticipation for the romantic, ballerina-esque pieces against my disdain for being anywhere near a Target parking lot in the midst of the holiday shopping season. As much as I dislike the crowds and the parking nightmares, I've concluded that Rodarte is surely enough to lure me into Target right before Christmas. I've got me eye on the leopard print dress worn by Dakota Fanning in Teen Vogue and the crepe-silk blend tulle dress pictured above, center. With this collection, my shopping strategy will be to select pieces that make more of a statement, hence my lack of enthusiasm for the denim jacket and LBD. Seeing as how this is Rodarte, I'm hoping to see attention to detail, interesting use of texture, and fun party-appropriate pieces in the collection. (Sequins, animal prints, and lots of sheer fabrics, please!) I haven't been this amped about a Target collaboration since the release of Richard Chai and Alexander McQueen's collections. So the countdown until December 20 begins...anyone else eyeing the collection?

**Update - read my review of Rodarte for Target here.
