Catherine Malandrino for Kohl's DesigNation Review

Out of curiosity, I stopped into Kohl's for a look at the Catherine Malandrino for DesigNation collection. Despite the lack of fanfare surrounding this collection, I still wanted to see the Parisian-themed pieces, especially after browsing the collection online a few days before the September 27th release.

Warning! If you love like color, then this collection may not appeal to you. If you can appreciate Gallic sartorial influences, then you might favor the printed tees and playful graphic blouses. The collection's simple palette of mostly black and white makes it easy to mix and match. As soon as I saw the clothing on the racks, I thought that these were easy, chic pieces with that French je ne sais quoi: minimal design details, yet great texture and tailoring. Most of the dresses I saw were slip-on styles with no zippers or fastenings. Simplement simple!

Store signage indicated that the collection was 25% off. Add in some store coupons, and the prices get even lower.

Unfortunately, the selection at my store was smaller that I had hoped. I really wanted to try on the pleated jumpsuit, laser-cut shift dress, and scroll jacquard sweater, which were nowhere to be found. I picked a few favorites and took them off to the very messy fitting rooms. For reference, I pulled size 2 and XS in everything, as the sizing looks true to Kohl's Misses sizes (which means I size down on everything).

Below, I'm wearing the Eiffel Tower sweater two different ways, with the textured knit skirt on the left, and with the hem tucked under and my own skinny jeans on the right. I loved the fun and on-trend Eiffel Tower graphic, but the 5% wool made it ever so slightly itchy to me. Due to the placement of the graphic, it's best for someone with a longer torso than me. In the middle, I'm wearing the hooded oversized jacket, which fits much like a poncho, although with drop shoulder seams and fitted knit sleeves that can be scrunched up. I found the snap closures to be flimsy, but loved the two front patch pockets. Overall, it's a great lightweight jacket for cool or rainy fall days. I'd pair it with dark leggings or slim trousers for a sleek outfit.

Below on the left is my favorite dress from the collection - the gored ponte dress. It truly has to be appreciated in person due to the impeccable tailoring. The lace sleeves and lace godet hem are very sophisticated, and not itchy at all. It's a dressy and chic pull-on style with a well tailored waist and flare in the hip area, which creates a nice hourglass silhouette. A major thumbs up on this one! In the middle, I'm wearing the striped oversized sweater. Like with the Eiffel Tower sweater, the small amount of wool made it uncomfortable for me. On the right is the embroidered shift dress, one of the more expensive pieces in the collection. It's also a pull-on style, and comes with an awkward nude slip, which left it ever so slightly sheer in the bright fitting room lights. It felt comfortable, although I felt the quality of the embroidery wasn't worth the price. I belted it to define the waist, since it's not as well tailored as the gored ponte dress.

My top pick for blouses in the collection is the Paris print blouse, which comes in white (on the left) and black (on the right). The white one is more sheer than the black, but I loved the fit and feel of both. They have snap front closures, and be warned that the wrists on these blouses are very fitted when snapped shut. In the middle is the only non black or white item I tried on - the oversized and stretchy Paris Je T'aime tee. Since tucking in this tee covers the message, I wore it untucked, so I would've preferred a smaller font on this top. I'm wearing my favorite skirt in the collection below - the pleated knit skirt, which also comes in a deep teal. I loved the easy fit, the thick feel of the fabric, and the pleated hemline. The slight A-line shape and versatility also appealed to me. This skirt is one of my must-haves in the collection. I can imagine it dressed up with a blazer and blouse, or dressed down with an embellished sweater and ankle boots.

Catherine Malandrino for Kohl's DesigNation dresses and clothing

Below on the left, I'm wearing the Paris oversized tee and pleated knit skirt. The tee's rayon and spandex fabric made it really soft, but difficult to tuck into the skirt without bulk. In the middle, I'm wearing the appliqué shift dress, which I belted for more shape. Like the other dresses, it's a pull-on style. I found it to be comfortable, although I wasn't crazy about the sleeves shape and length, or the swirly, scroll-cut embroidered designs, therefore, I didn't think it was worth the price. On the right, I tucked the dress into the textured knit skirt to style it as a top. While I liked the shape and the thick fabric of the knit skirt, I found the dot/stripe print to be almost dizzying. The contrast striped waistband was an interesting detail that I found to be unexpected, though.

In conclusion, I thought this collection didn't scream high-low designer collaboration, as the pieces are chic, minimal in design details, and easy to wear. Simple, sophisticated styles with great tailoring is where this collection went right. Perfect for that insouciant French style that looks so easy to attain!

Due to long lines, I didn't make any purchases, but I may be going back armed with coupons for my favorites.

Target Trendspotting - The Crop Top

Crop tops are having their moment in the fashion spotlight. If baring your midriff isn't something you've considered, try pairing one with a high-waisted pencil skirt for a more demure effect. A sliver of exposed skin in the ab area can create a look that is both playful and ladylike. Since it's fall, there's always the option to add a jacket for more coverage. Remember to wear heels for an extra dose of chic, and prepare yourself for lots of compliments!

Sam & Libby for Target Review - Part 2

This post contains affiliate links and I may be compensated if purchases are made by clicking links.

Welcome to another installment of Sam & Libby for Target. Shoes are my everything, and since Target is a frequent haunt of mine, it only makes sense for me to review the Sam & Libby for Target collection. You might recall the review I wrote of the line when it debuted last spring. It was May, and I was awaiting some ankle boots. Fast forward to September, and they certainly delivered. I tried on a few of my favorite picks in store and I'll be sharing my first impressions on fit and comfort.

Here's what I loved about the fall 2013 collection:
  • Lots of ankle boots to choose from
  • Fun design details such as buckles, animal prints, and studs
  • A wide variety of styles from ballet flats and pointy pumps to flat boots
  • Prices all under $50
  • Most styles run true to size
Here's what I did not love about the collection:
  • Some of the faux leather materials felt stiff
  • The knee boots ran small for me

The Brynn ballet flats below had great cushioning and felt nice, but unfortunately, flats just don't work for me. I appreciated the sparkly cap toe and bow detail, as it adds a chic, feminine touch. Loved the versatility and that they can be dressed up or down.

The Dominique pumps below were more comfortable than I was expecting. I went half a size up because my regular size 7 wasn't available. They are super pointy, but were easy for me to walk in on the carpet. The mock crocodile texture makes them look more luxe, and they're a great option for the office or for special occasions. They also come in a few chic colors. A benefit to pointy pumps? They make legs look longer!

As an ankle boot lover, the Selena boots in leopard print looked interesting to me on the shelf. Once I tried them on, they were more comfortable than the pumps pictured above, but I wasn't crazy about the elastic ankle detail and the color. I would've preferred some more black in the print. These are a slip-on style, and they were easy to put on and take off. I liked the 3.75" heel because it wasn't too high, but it did give me substantial height. On the plus side, these also come in black, tan, and chocolate brown.

The Kaye boots below win the award for edgiest pair of shoes in the collection. They're similar to this chic suede style by Sam Edelman. The slightly curved heel and buckles give them a sleek, modern edge with a hint of rebellion. The small platform made them easy to walk in, and I found them to be comfortable while I tested them out on the carpet. At $44.99, they're pricier than most Target boots, but they're versatile enough to work with dresses and tights for winter or with cropped skinny denim and cozy sweaters for fall. These were my second favorite pair in the collection. They also come in a black/brown color combination.

The Parker boots were my least favorite. Why? The inside zip only comes up to mid calf, and once I got them on, they were tight on my calves. Unfortunately, I found them a bit cumbersome and stiff to walk in, and they made me feel like a CHP officer. I recommend going at least half a size up on these unless you have skinny calves.

I saved the best for last. The Paxton boots are so similar to the Sam Edelman Petty boots I own in two colors. Naturally, I love this boot's profile. The buckles lend them a rocker vibe, and the flat heel makes them super comfortable. These came home with me, and after wearing them for many hours, I'm happy to report that they are winners. My only issue is that the heel is soft and doesn't click on the floor the way the Petty's heels do. I went half a size up so I can wear them with insoles and thick winter socks. They also come in cognac. At $44.99, these are must-haves in my book.

Target Trendspotting - Gray Days

Plaid has always been a go-to print for fall, and this season is gets an update on this tee with faux leather sleeves. In this casual look, I've paired the mixed material top with grey skinny jeans, which are a fun alternative to blue or black denim. Accessories in traditional fall hues such as olive and burgundy lend a relaxed and sporty vibe to the look, while a chunky necklace toughens things up. I'd wear this for a lazy weekend at the flea market, out to lunch, or for a day of shopping when comfortable shoes (with height) are a priority. Layer up with a cool moto jacket or preppy blazer for added coziness.

A Peek at Black Halo Style

There's something to be said for a perfectly tailored dress that fits and flatters in all the right places. Laurel Berman, the Los Angeles-based designer and founder of Black Halo, knows exactly how to create that perfect fit. If Black Halo sounds familiar, it's because countless celebrities such as Tyra Banks, Louise Roe, and Kelly Ripa are fans of the brand, which was founded in 2002. Their trademark sheath dress, the Jackie O, has been seen on many a red carpet.

Black Halo's signature style consists of pencil dresses, structure, and sleek silhouettes combined with strategic tailoring, interesting necklines, customizable zip slits, and gorgeous fabrics from Italy, France, Germany, and (even lace from) New Jersey. They're famous for their "day-to-dinner" or "boardroom-to-the-bar" dresses.  Their designs are supposed to make the wearer two inches taller and five pounds thinner. Who doesn't love that!

I had a chance to browse the collection and chat with Laurel Berman at a Neiman Marcus fall preview recently. By the end of the event, which featured informal modeling to an enthusiastic crowd of about forty women, dresses were flying off the racks.

Scroll down for highlights from the event, photos of my favorite dresses, and an exclusive interview with Laurel Berman in which we discuss personal style and the future of the brand.

Here's the inside scoop from my interview with designer Laurel Berman:

FTG: How would you describe the Black Halo woman?
LB: Confident, sexy, and polished.

FTG: How would you describe your personal style?
LB: I'm more casual, but when I need to dress up, my style is clean, well-tailored, made of nice fabric, and with something special in the cut, seaming, or detail. I have a bit of an edge. I love breaking the rules. (Hence the name of the brand Black Halo, which designates a naughty angel.)

FTG: Is there a celebrity that you haven't dressed yet that you'd love to dress?
LB: I'd love to dress Charlize Theron and Angelina Jolie.

FTG: If you were going on a weekend getaway and you could only take one piece, what would it be?
LB: The Liam dress is a combination of leopard, black, and a sweater. It's a clean sheath with angora sleeves and neckline and a black bottom. It's really simple and polished.

FTG: Where do you see Black Halo in five years?
LB: We just opened a showroom in New York, and we're looking to grow the brand. I also want to increase our real estate in stores.

FTG: How does living in L.A. influence your designs?
LB: I  love the West Coast, the lifestyle, and yoga. It keeps me comfortable in a good space so I can be creative.

FTG: What can we expect to see for spring 2014?
LB: We have a new ball gown for evening that's a solid crepe with a sheen, and a simple strapless ball gown with pockets that comes in coral, white, and metal. The fabric has a sheen like satin but doesn't wrinkle. It has neoprene on the back for stretch and I'm really excited about that dress. There's also ombré, stripes, and more neoprene for evening. We also have a graphic floral with pink, yellow, and dahlia. For daytime dresses, one of my favorite things is two pieces together sold as one - a flyaway cami with a high waisted skirt that comes in two versions.

FTG: Any words of wisdom for aspiring fashion designers?
LB: Don't give up, because it's not an easy business. Stay true to who you are. This line is who I am, and I stuck to my aesthetic. I'm on-trend, but never really trendy. Looking good is always in style!

Target Trendspotting - Grunge Goddess

Having lived through the grunge movement of the 1990s, I'm pleased to see the revival of the rock-inspired trend this fall. This time around, it's more sophisticated and polished, with thickly smudged eyeliner and unwashed hair  à la Courtney Love optional. For a new "glam grunge" look that's more 2013 than 1993, I'm drawn to the juxtaposition of worn-in plaid tops over long floral chiffon dresses.

Afraid of mixing prints? Just pick pieces in the same color palette and print scale. Add a denim or moto jacket and tights for cold winter days.  Don't forget to toughen up the look with comfortable moto or combat boots and earthy accessories. For added grunge factor, style your outfit with a slouchy beanie, ear cuffs, and plenty of devil-may-care attitude.
Rock on!

Target Trendspotting - Knit Wit

Fall is an exciting season for fashion because of the opportunities for layering and experimenting with new trends. I tend to stock up on lightweight knits this time of year in anticipation of cooler temperatures. They fit the bill for summer-to-fall transitional style because they're easy to layer when days are warm and nights are chilly.

Need styling ideas for your fall knits? Throw a graphic print sweater or colorful cardigan over a lightweight T-shirt or silky button-front blouse. Add a pencil skirt or tailored trousers and heels for sophistication, or stick with slightly distressed skinny denim and chic ballet flats for a more relaxed look. When winter sets in, layer your sweater over a thin turtleneck and under a cozy vest, lined parka or wool coat for more warmth.

Below are six of my fall favorites from Target.
