Five New Finds

I've been going out on the town more frequently the past few months, and for a girl who loves to get dressed up, this is good news. I'm oddly pleased to reveal that I haven't repeated an outfit yet (hey, it may sound diva-like, but it's a small world, and I don't want to be caught in the same look twice). On the other hand, I'm actually a bit ashamed to admit that there are still items in my closet that I've yet to wear. As more birthdays and events are coming up soon, that will probably change as I put more of my new purchases into rotation.

So given that I am not keen on wearing the same outfit more than once when it comes to a night on the town, I've been transitioning away from the florals that I favored this summer and I'm presently in a phase where I'm favoring a French-chic Breton striped top paired sequin skirts/trousers/leggings. As the nights cool off this season, I envision wearing more faux fur and beaded trophy jackets, LBDs, textured tights, and higher heels with a platform. On the subject of heels...my 6" Ashish for Topshop zebra wedges (which caused quite a stir on Saturday night amongst my female friends) have started a new precedent for heels - now 5" seems weirdly minimal...crazy, I know. I'm petite and I just can't help liking the feeling of being five to six inches taller.

In my quest for fun new pieces to inspire my going-out looks for fall, I found a few new arrivals at trendy British high street store Miss Selfridge that appealed to me...

Don't Mock The Croc

By the time my Christopher Kane for Topshop items arrived today via the U.S. Postal Service, I was so excited that the current heat wave we're experiencing in southern California ceased to annoy me, and I immediately changed into the (sold out) croc tee and eyelet peep-toes in order to make it to my dinner reservation on time. Admittedly the outfit isn't creative, but in the interest of time and practicality, I just added sequin leggings to keep the silhouette somewhat simple and unfussy. The heels are 5.5" with a 1.5" platform, and are reasonably comfortable given their vertiginous design. I further tested their comfort after dinner by going to the fabric store for some shoulder pads, and then to my favorite yogurt shop for dessert. The verdict? Although I prefer footwear with a heel cup (to keep my foot in place), these heels are amazing, and combined with the croc tee, they make quite the statement.

Fall '09 Window Shopping

Recent shopping excursions in Thousand Oaks and Santa Barbara have resulted in some mildly inspiring store window photos, five of which I've decided to share.

Although fall has officially begun, the stifling heat here in southern California still dictates summer-y attire. As someone who prefers cool weather (since it offers more opportunities to layer), I certainly appreciate cool fall evenings. I'm highly anticipating the end of this heat wave so that I can finally wear some of my fall favorites: over-the-knee boots, textured legwear, slouchy beanies, fingerless gloves, and faux fur jackets. Below are some of the trends I am loving for fall.

Feeling Floral

When I'm traveling, practicality always dictates my wardrobe choices. You probably won't catch me in five inch heels, cumbersome dresses, or impractical pencil skirts when I'm out exploring or sightseeing. Instead, I opt for casual, comfortable clothing such as sneakers, skinnies, and cozy knits. While I've got a soft spot for high heels, I've come to accept that they just aren't worth the pain and discomfort during hour after hour on my feet (unless I'm all dolled up and out on the town, of course). For last week's tour of the Hearst Castle, I wore a floral blouse and embellished cardigan to give my jeans a more feminine flair, and finished the look with my always-reliable Chucks.

The Scent Of Bebe

Upon my return home from San Francisco on Friday evening, I was pleasantly surprised to see that a package from Bebe had arrived. You may have seen the recent eye-catching Bebe fragrance ads featuring a striking, pale redhead wearing absolutely nothing. Well I opened up the bag and caught a whiff of the new Bebe scent.

Bebe perfume

I've always been extremely picky when it comes to the perfumes that I wear. I currently have about five different fragrances that I wear in constant rotation, and when I visit a department store to sample various perfumes, I typically cringe more often than enjoy them. So what did I think of this one? My asessment of Bebe's new effort was a thumbs up - I actually liked it. (If I didn't like it, trust me, I wouldn't be blogging about it.) I found it to be light, floral, and perfect for wearing on a lunch date or for a sunny day at the flea market. It has key top notes of juicy mango, leafy tuberose and yellow peonies, and the packaging accurately describes it as, "a sensuous blend of sumptuous florals and sultry musks." For those who want to give it a try, the fragrance retails for $12 - $65 and comes in a playful heart-shaped bottle.

SF Highlights

It's always refreshing to get out of town for a change of scenery. Last week's absence from the blog gave me the chance to explore and enjoy northern California and my favorite American city - San Francisco. The scenic (and long) drive through pastoral areas affords great views of hillsides dotted with abandoned farmhouses and grazing cows.

Photobucket

I finally visited the Hearst Castle, with its sprawling hillsides, lush furnishings, multiple guest houses, and amazing ocean views.

After the castle tour, it was off to an early dinner in the charming coastal town of Cambria a few miles away.

Photobucket

Due to having no cell phone service or internet connection in Cambria, I was able to relax, walk by the beach, and enjoy the views right as the sun was setting.

Photobucket

Then it was on to San Francisco, and my excitement grew as I neared the city and anticipated my upcoming activities.

Photobucket

The hotel room in San Francisco actually had a water view, as well as a close proximity to the largest H&M in the city, which I visited twice in two days (hey, they get new shipments in daily).

Photobucket

At Macy's in Union Square, I browsed the RACHEL Rachel Roy collection and tried on the velvet 24 hour dress I'd been eyeing. As the sizing ran large, I tried on a zero (which would ordinarily never fit me), and realized that the dress was still a little roomy, so I added the belt to cinch it in. I gravitated towards a few dresses in the collection, however, being petite, I found that the lengths and proportions weren't flattering on me, so I didn't purchase anything.

Photobucket

The next day I ventured to the deYoung Museum for a look at the ever-popular King Tut exhibition, which was well worth the long wait in line.

Photobucket

Afterwards, I took a quick walk acoss the courtyard to the Planetarium (where I watched a breathtaking show called Fragile Planet) and the eco-friendly living rooftop garden at the California Academy of Sciences.

Five For Fall '09

What's fall without new items to update the wardrobe? Right now, platform booties, anything adorned with sequins, and playful party-worthy pieces are on my style radar. This week I'll be traveling and doing some serious shopping. I'm looking forward to: examining Rachel Roy's wares at Macy's, shopping the new arrivals in the Divided line at one of the biggest/best H&M locations, and browsing the sky high heels at both Bebe and Steve Madden. Expect few updates from me this week, as I put updating the bloggy blog on the back burner. For now, though, I'd like to share the five items that are at the top of my current wish list.

Anna Sui For Target Fitting Room Review

Anna Sui for Target

With mild enthusiasm in my heart, I schlepped to Target last night to inspect Anna Sui's Gossip Girl-influenced designs for the mass retailer. Don't get me wrong, I do watch Gossip Girl, however, being well past high school and college, I was probably not the target demographic for this collection. With the intention of scooping up the Blair-inspired tablecloth dress (the one with the blue bow), I slowly browsed the 4 racks and noted that the entire collection, including the one dress I truly wanted, was not in stock. Knowing that they only allow six items at a time in the always-stuffy-and-never-air-conditioned fitting rooms, I grabbed a few of my favorites and headed off to snap some photos.

Anna Sui for Target

First up, the purple duet tee, which I found to be terrible itchy around the neckline due to the tulle. I tried on a size small and was happy with the fitted silhouette. The quality seemed decent, and I liked the jeweled embellishments at the neckline, however, it was just too itchy for me.

The next piece I tried was the gray tee with a doily-esque neckline detail, complete with fringing. The pretty details also continue on the back of the shirt. Although the length was longer than I desired, I figured I'd tuck it in for a different silhouette. It should be noted that the tee is slightly sheer, and made of a lightweight tencel, which I found to be incredibly comfortable. I tried on a size small, and found it to be a bit roomy. (After all was said and done, this was the only piece I bought.)

Photobucket

As much as I wanted to like the polyester metallic jacquard dress, it was unbearably itchy, like the purple tee, and I couldn't wait to take it off. I loved the mix of warm yellow tones with cool blue and black hues in addition to the lustrous finish. I tried on a size 1, and found it to run a bit big, as my usual size is 3 or 5. The fabric tie belt allows for a custom fit, and the threaded metallic detail can be appreciated much better in person. Just as with a few other dresses in the line, I found the hook and eye closures at the back neck to be difficult to fasten and unfasten.

Photobucket

Photobucket

As I shopped the racks, a young woman walked by this metallic bouclé dress and commented, "wow, this is strange." Indeed, the neckline detail seemed to be executed poorly, and slightly itchy. It was also too low cut for my tastes, although the fabric was hefty, and the dress had a feature which I love - side pockets. The back of the dress (not pictured) exposes some skin, but overall, I found the boxy, A-line fit to be unflattering on me. For reference, I tried on a size 3.

Photobucket

Upon inspecting the herringbone dress, I liked the velvet trim, the stud details, and the quality of the sturdy cotton fabric. The velvet trim reminded me of the cage skirts that Susie Bubble has popularized. I tried on a size 3, and liked the slightly roomy A-line silhouette, although the dress was a bit longer than I would've liked. I think this dress would look great worn to the office when paired with a cropped, tailored blazer and some mary janes. Just a quality note - upon taking a closer look at the neckline, I found some threads that could've used some trimming.

Photobucket

Photobucket

The lace halter dress (in a size 3) had an easy fit, except for the collar neckline, which practically choked me. The back neckline closure was tricky, and found it to be too low-cut in the front. It seemed well made, although not something I could see myself wearing. Two things I liked about this frock: there is a chic champagne-colored lining, and the waistline is nicely tailored.

Photobucket

Photobucket

The blue foulard dress, my favorite of all the dresses I tried on, had a lightweight feel, and was made of polyester. The addition of a stretchy belt was a plus, as I wear belts with many of my dresses. (What better way to cinch in the waist and create a more fitted shape?) I liked the puffy sleeves, frilly neckline detail, and the secretary-like tie. I found the 3/4-sleeve length to be awkward though, and would've preferred either short sleeves or full length sleeves. This dress was so amazingly comfortable, I think it would work just as well for summer nights as for cool fall days. I tried on an extra small, but struggled with the back zipper, as it kept getting stuck. Despite the pesky zipper and odd sleeve length, I think I may go back for this dress, we'll have to see...

Photobucket

Lastly, the bird tee was an unexpected surprise, as it wasn't in the lookbook, and I didn't see it in any of the reviews of the recent Anna Sui for Target pop-up shop in NYC. I liked the bird appliqué, but thought the black polyester trim was ungraceful, as the sleeves bunched up in an unflattering manner on the inside. For reference, I tried on a small, and the fit was snug, although comfortable.

In general, I was pleased with the attention to detail and the tailoring in this collection, and liked the variety of colors and prints. I would've liked to have seen more bottoms in this collection, as it was heavy on dresses. With regards to the pricing, I think many Target customers might have trouble paying as much as $69.99 for a dress. On the other hand, Anna Sui fans may be happy to grab her designs at such price points.

When choosing what to try on, I steered clear of the Vanessa-inspired brown/orange/mustard pieces, as those colors simply don't flatter me and I know I'd never wear them. Knowing that Christopher Kane for Topshop and Rodarte for Target are on the horizon probably influenced me to buy less, as I anticipate splurging on some of those pieces.

Kane's Killer Collection

Somewhere in my relentless internet search for photos and information on Christopher Kane's upcoming 39-piece collection for Topshop, I spied some lustworthy eyelet platforms. After seeing more of the lookbook on a Scandinavian blogger's site, it was official - I was intrigued, and couldn't get enough of the mesh and eyelet flourishes. When the complete lookbook and a short (but glitzy) video became available on Topshop's website last night, I slowly perused them and began debating which pieces to buy. With prices considerably higher than I normally pay for clothing and footwear, it's going to be a tough decision. Then again, it's a more affordable way to get my hands on some of Christopher Kane's designs. I'm betting that many pieces will sell out within hours, so a vigilant proximity to a computer will be in order next week when the collection is released. Below, some of the items that I'm most drawn to.

Rare-ly Stylish

Rare clothing

When I received this invite last week to the Rare A/W '09 press day on September 11 in London, my first reaction was a) to reprimand myself for not yet moving to London, and b) to take a closer at this affordable, Liverpool-based high street brand which I had seen at Topshop and know very little about. A quick peek at the website revealed an easy-to-navigate layout with my favorite feature, New Arrivals. There's also a function that allows users to create their own looks. Rather than do that, I've hand picked a few items that illustrate some of fall's strongest trends: military styling, strong shoulders, madcap florals, peek-a-boo details, and sequins and studs as embellishments.

I Just Wanna Dischoe

Sequins and shoulder pads are two trends that I've been scouting at thrift stores lately. I just unearthed this Dynasty-esque top (which covers both trends and is worthy of an '80s-era disco party) for less than the price of a movie ticket. With similar sequin styles going for well over $100 at Topshop, I feel quite pleased with my new find, as it's in mint condition. I'm left wondering who owned this before me and what fun times were had while wearing it...

Paired with my new faux leather mini from Forever 21 and a stretchy belt to cinch the waist, I'm ready to create some new memories in this top.

Zebra Dreams

If it weren't for the presence of my neighbors, I would've let out an exceedingly emphatic exclaim of "Ashish!" upon seeing a box from Arcadia Group on my doorstep today. Yes, my beloved Ashish for Topshop wedges finally arrived after a long week of anticipation and excitement. In typical fashion blogger style, I'm gushing about them to all my friends and now, to my readers. With six full inches of height, a zebra print, and pony skin texture, they're certainly not for the faint at heart. As soon as I put them on, I experienced what it's like to be tall...well at least taller than the average American woman. After becoming accustomed to my newfound and much appreciated height, I took them for a spin at Trader Joe's, where more than one extended stare made me chuckle in amusement as I stood perched on these odd beauties with armfuls of fruit and yogurt. As a testament to the comfort and stability of these wedges, I successfully carried two heavy bags of groceries up a steep flight of stairs without incident. Now I know that I previously complained about the price, but I'm confident that they're worth every penny (especially after seeing how much they're currently going for on ebay). I can't wait to style these "hooves" in funkier emsembles once the weather cools down.
