Target Trendspotting - The Nautical Resort Trend 3 Ways

Year after year, nautical fashion themes reappear in stores for the resort and early spring seasons. While imagery of anchors, crisp trousers, and Breton tops may come to mind, Target's take on the trend is a refreshing one with colorfully saturated prints and lively geometric patterns. Vivid hues including bright orange, aqua, and navy pop against a palette of ivory, beige, and metallics.

If you're not lucky enough to be jetting off or setting sail to somewhere warm and tropical, it's not too early to start thinking about nautical-inspired ensembles for spring 2014. I've styled three versions of the nautical/resort trend, each with a different theme.

My first resort look is a preppy take on the trend with playful print mixing and coordinated colors. Aviator sunglasses add a glam factor, while flat shoes ground the look and keep it casual.

Shop the outfit:
1. sunglasses
2. graphic tee
3. cardigan
4. skirt
5. crossbody bag
6. metallic oxfords

New nautical, my second look, is a more polished version of the nautical trend with classic navy stripes and chic accessories. Wear this look to the office, on a lunch date, or to a casual daytime party.

Shop the outfit:
1. faux leather jacket
2. striped sweater
3. watch set
4. striped skirt
5. print scarf
6. metallic pumps

Look #3 is a laid back take on the trend with drapey pants and comfortable ankle boots. Pretty earrings and a bold manicure elevate the outfit with hints of color. Wear on a lazy weekend, to the flea market, or for running errands around town.

1. earrings
2. printed top
3. nail polish
4. colorblock cardigan
5. printed pants
6. crossbody bag
7. ankle boots
