2009 Fashion Trends

I was recently asked to be a guest speaker for a Fashion Trend Forecasting class at a community college. Since trend forecasting has always been my area of interest in the fashion industry, I was honored have the opportunity to share my experiences with the class. As part of my presentation, I constructed a trend board to illustrate what I think will be important trends in 2009. So what should you be on the lookout for? Well I'm betting on some of the following trends:

1. high shine fabrics, PVC, and glossy finishes
2. structured, intricate knitwear (think Sandra Backlund)
3. drop-crotch, slouchy trousers and carrot pants
4. menswear-inspired items such as bowties, bowler and trilby hats, and tailored blazers
5. decorative embellishments including feathers, crystals, bows, fringe, pleating, and ruffles
6. sharp tailoring and high volume in the hip/thigh area as well as sharp shoulder silhouettes
7. statement headpieces, jewelry, and belts
8. sculptural footwear (think cut-outs, architectural details, and pointy toes)
9. deconstructed knits and distressed denim for a worn-in, DIY look
10. modern, luxe bohemian (aka "foho", which comes from folk + boho)
11. unique, handmade pieces (see etsy.com for endless examples)
12. sensible shift dresses + kitten heels (inspired by Michelle Obama)
